Nelson Tasman Hospice is on the move – but it needs support from the community to make it happen. The hospice, which has been at its current Manuka St site since 1999, is currently looking for a 1.4ha site, ideally in or around Stoke or Richmond. The move comes with the planned expansion of Manuka St Hospital, meaning the current site will not be big enough for both facilities. Hospice chief executive Frans Dellebeke says he sees the move as a “huge positive step forward,” giving them the opportunity to create something better for patients, families and staff. The new building, which needs to be up and running by early 2019, will also be able to offer more outdoor space and gardens – something that has always been on the board’s wish-list. Once a site has been identified, fund-raising will begin, and Frans says he is confident the community will get behind them to help them achieve their goal. “There is no government money to fund the building of a new hospice, so we will rely on grants and fundraising initiatives, which we know the community will get behind,” he says.

Rainbow Rage on one wheel, and one leg Nelson man Ethan Bruce has completed the 106km Rainbow Rage not only on one wheel, but also one leg. The Richmond volunteer fire fighter completed Sunday’s Rainbow Rage on a unicycle, despite breaking his leg in two places just 30 kilometres into the race. “I went to wipe my brow and I clipped a stone which bounced me sky high, and when I came down my foot slipped and got wrenched in between the fork and

Mike says it simply wasn’t financial anymore. “After 21 years, the bottom line is the numbers of riders aren’t up there and the costs are increasing,” says Mike. “But it’s been so much fun, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed running the Rage through the years. The riders are really neat, positive people and for some of them over the years the Rage has certainly been their Everest.” Nelson rider Henry Kersten won the race, in a field of 210 riders, with a time of 3:32:44. Ethan has currently raised close to $1000 for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand, but he hopes to break the $3000 mark. Andrew Board During her 20 year support for the Nelson Giants, one thing has remained constant for 96 year old Doris Cuthbert – a kiss from her favourite player, Phill Jones. Doris has attended every home game for the Mike Pero Nelson Giants since the early 1990s, a time-frame that has matched Phill Jones’ remarkable 23 year career with the team. She says, after every game she gets a kiss on the cheek from some of the players, including her favourite, Phill. “The players go past me when they come on and go off and I never miss out getting a kiss from Phill,” says Doris. “It’s quite nice.” This season management at the Giants have decided to gift Doris and her daughter, Kathy Cuthbert, season passes after years of buying them. But it isn’t the first time she’s been surprised by the team she loves, two years ago they made her a 95th birthday cake. Doris says she started playing basketball when she was around ten but only started supporting the Giants after her daughter Colleen Carston took her along one night in the

The centre have officially registered the event with Guinness World Records, and are now looking for volunteers to help make an estimated 500 poi over the next month, which they will be selling on the day for $2 if people don’t have their own. Nicola says that in the coming weeks they will also be holding poi-making workshops at Victory Primary School, who are backing the event. Anyone is welcome to come along to the workshops and donations of plastic shopping bags and foam mattresses for the poi stuffing would be welcomed. The record attempt will be held on Wednesday April 13 at Victory Square. Check in from 3:30pm with the record attempt at 5pm. Views on Southern Link sought Nelsonians are being invited to make their voices heard on the Southern Link, during a five-week period of public engagement that kicks off tomorrow. The NZTA will be gathering feedback on how to improve Nelson’s arterial transport network from Wednesday March 23 through to Sunday April 24 as part of the Programme Business Case stage of the Southern Link

investigation, which is the second of four stages. NZTA regional director Raewyn Bleakley says that local views and feedback are integral to finalising the Business Case. “Now is the time in the investigation where we look at all the possible ideas,” she says. “We’ve been developing some initial ideas and we also want to hear the

community’s views on other options and combinations of options.” Four public information sessions will also be held in April in Nelson, Stoke, and Richmond, where people can ask investigation representatives questions and provide feedback.

Superyacht makes waves: A $32 million super yacht, with an on-board helicopter, was docked at Wakefield Quay last week.The super yacht Evviva was .co.nz built in the United States in 2006 and last year was on the market for US$22.5

million, or $33.3 million in New Zealand dollars. It is reported to be owned by Bayliner Marine Corporation founder John Orin Edson, who is worth more than a billion US dollars, according to Forbes Magazine. Boat International website says it is 50 metres long and can host 12 guests in six cabins. Film star in Nelson: Hollywood actor Michael Keaton has been enjoying the sights of Nelson – if his Instagram page is anything to go by. The actor is known for his roles in the

.CO.NZ Oscar-winning Spotlight, Batman, Birdman and Beetlejuice, amongst many others. He has posted photos to his Instragram page of fly fishing rivers near Murchison, restaurants in Nelson and a video of people playing beach cricket at Tahunanui Beach. Michael’s page is followed by 24,000 people. River Haven Lodge also posted several photos of the actor with some recently caught trout on their Facebook page. Owner Scott Murray says Michael and his girlfriend stayed at their lodge for three nights and fished for two days. “He loves fishing in New Zealand and was a brilliant, humble, nice, friendly guest. Marsden Park subdivision has been involved in nearly every Neighbours Day, hosting this year’s gathering on a grassy reserve on Plumtree Lane, last Sunday. Over 40 residents turned out for the informal picnic after their Neighbourhood Watch coordinator, Lawrie Currie, put invitations in each home's letterbox. “Three years ago when I moved in there were only six houses, now there are 62 and we gave no-

tices to everyone. There’s one way in and one way out, so it’s a natural neighbourhood,” says Lawrie. “We’ve been to pretty much all the previous Neighbours Day gatherings, it’s a great sense of community and also we need to meet people who we don’t know because there are a whole lot of new people here,” says resident, Jo Managh. Around 45 gatherings took place throughout Nelson on both Saturday and Sunday, some just a picnic amongst a few households, others swelling to include close to 80 residents.

Young patient donates painting to hospital The walls in the Nelson Hospital paediatrics ward are a little more interesting now thanks to a "fabulous" gift from one of the ward's former patients. Imogen Vlugter, 11, was a patient in Nelson Hospital late last year when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and coeliac disease. Last week, she returned to the hospital to donate a framed print by Nelson artist Anna Aceves to be hung on the art-wall in the paediatrics ward. Imogen won the signed print in a colouring-in competition and says she wanted to

donate it to the paediatrics ward so other children and their parents could enjoy it as well. "I like painting nature and animals and plants, so when I was in hospital I wanted to look at all the art on the walls," Imogen says. "Then I won Anna's painting and wanted to share that with all the children who go into hospital." Imogen's mother Julie says they are both keen artists and spent a lot of time together "exploring and looking at all the paintings on the walls" when they were in Nelson

Jenny says they will put a plaque on the framed print saying it was donated to the ward by Imogen.

Nayland Pools opens for the dogs

Nayland Pool went to the dogs for the end of season Dog Splash on Saturday. From a four-month-old Jack Russell to a gigantic Burmese Mountain Dog and every breed in | paint | wallpaper | curtains between, Nelson’s canines had full run of the pools, for a splash in the water, treats, lots of fetch and no leads in sight. Seasonal Manager Nic Stuart says, “humans have had their turn, now it’s time for the dogs.” This is the second year Nayland have let the dogs run loose after

closing the facilities to the public at the end of the season. Stoke vet nurse Leah Kenton says the day is a great idea. “There’s not really anywhere in Nelson for dogs to hang out and blinds play without having to be on a lead, so its just great to be able to let them all off and see them all play.” Owners gave a gold coin donation entry, from which over $140 was raised for the Second Chance charity, a group dedicated to rehoming pound dogs.

Warmer Healthier Homes was initiated by the Rata Foundation in 2014 with the aim of insulating the homes of low income families for free to help improve their health. The majority of families were referred to the scheme by health professionals but this month two new organisations, Age Concern and Sexual Abuse Support and Healing (SASH), have come on board. Warmer Healthier Homes Nelson Tasman committee chair Bill Dahlberg says health professionals have played a big part in the success of the scheme and now Warmer Healthier Homes has widened its reach by partnering community groups like Age Concern and SASH. Warmer Healthier Homes is funded by the Rata Foundation, Nelson City Council and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, with the government’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority matching that funding, dollar for dollar. Absolute Energy's Paul Brockie says the scheme is great value with an average cost of just $2800 to insulate each home, providing significant and immediate health benefits. "We are getting good results and they are instant and that's what drives us," he says. However, Bill says they need to secure further long-term funding partners to achieve their strategic goal that Warmer Healthier Homes becomes a sustainable project. "We've done over 250 homes in Nelson and Tasman, but I estimate that there are around 2000 homes in the region that are badly in need of insulation, so we still have a long way to go."

Relay money already going to good use

Money raised from this month's Relay for Life is to go towards helping Nelson cancer patients undergo physiotherapy. A cheque for $1500 was presented to Helen Nott of Activate Physiotherapy on Friday morning, who provides specialised cancer rehabilitation programmes for all ages, and all types of cancers. Linda Lucre from the Cancer Society, who presented the cheque, says the idea is to “give back to the community” after Relay for Life. “We don’t want patients to not be able to afford it and Helen does such a fantastic job,” she says. Activate Physiotherapy are the only local certified providers of PINC and STEEL cancer physiotherapy rehabilitation programmes, which help improve the strength, quality of life and sense of well-being of men and women diagnosed with cancer.

Original surfers return to It’s been decades since they patrolled the waves and religiously listened to surf reports, but Nelson’s original beach bums are once again returning to the sand and surf. With stories of big waves, hot girls, road trips and rescues, the Tahunanui Surf Life Saving Club and the Nelson Board Riders Club will descend on Tahunanui for a reunion next month. These ocean mavericks were the first in Nelson to make surfboards, hang ten, get piped and don the iconic surf lifesaving uniform, and they say the region was even more of a beach mecca back in the 1960s. "The beach used to be busier than Surfers Paradise, there was hardly a spot to lie down," says Roger Gibbon. Member of the board riders club, Geoff Combs, says the surf club was the centre of activity in Tahuna. “We used to host the

Beachcomers Ball, New Year’s Day beach races, carnivals and King Neptune Day.” King Neptune day was an annual event where “King Neptune” was paddled in to the beach by his man servants in a surf canoe, and he was dressed up in seaweed and a crown. The king would judge sandcastles, tiny tots, and the Mr and Miss Tahunanui competition. Tahunanui Surf Life Saving Club: The Tahunanui Surf Life Saving Club was founded in 1958 to keep the beach safe for swimmers and give beach-loving locals a chance to challenge themselves. The club was a big part of the beach scene at Tahuna until it closed down in 1981. Pete Chapman says there were some big rescues and sad drownings. “I was there when the local chemists’ son drowned off the spit. He was with a school group down the back beach, they’d gone

along the spit and got into trouble and he drowned, but I was only in primary school then.” While the club was a popular place, there was no place for female members. “We all had girlfriends,” says Pete. “But it was the 60s, there were no female members. But there were girls everywhere, there was always quite a bit of talent on the beach, if you had your cap on and were on pa-

Nelson Board Riders Club: The Nelson Board Riders was formed in the early 1960s by the surfing side of the Tahunanui Surf Life Saving Club. Former member Henk Beek remembers the birth of surf in Nel-

son and was right amongst the sunscreen and speedos. “It was the early 60s when we started hearing about this board riding thing and this guy in Hawaii. We saw they were wooden boards and we had two or three builders in the club, Dunbar, John Ford and Sharpells, so we all got together and started making our own boards.” Henk says their boards were “massive”, around 2.5 metres long and 8cm thick. “They looked like ironing boards," he says. "We didn’t do tricks, we didn’t have wet-suits or leg ropes, we just stood and rode. We did the occasional zig zag but the big boards were hard to turn, we did hang ten and a bit of piping, if there was a good surf you could ride the pipe and if we did that we were stoked.” Pete Chapman, the first president of the Nelson Board Riders Club, remembers the endless

Trafalgar Centre getting ready to welcome the Giants The date for the first stage of reopening the Trafalgar Centre is drawing ever nearer and the work site is a hive of activity six days a week. The strengthening work in the main stadium will be finished ready for the first game of the Nelson Giants season on 2 April. The main stadium will be safe and functional but work is still going on. It is important to remember this won’t be a complete reopening of the venue as there is still much work to be done.

What you need to know if you are going to the game The full seating capacity, including the corporate area, will be available for the first game. The newly formed car park is on track to be available for the game and will have a new access road from Paru Paru Road.

This car park is nearer to the tennis court end of the centre and this is where the temporary main entrance will be until the rest of the building is complete. Look out for the signs on the night. The car park lighting is also due to be ready for the April game but there may still be temporary lighting in other areas including the new access road so please take care. If you are heading to the game on foot, access will be available over the three footbridges: • Maitai to Trafalgar Park • Saltwater Creek to Haven Road • Saltwater Creek to the Port (via the Maitai Walkway) The walkway that leads off Halifax

A recent review of Council assets identified that Betts Carpark, at the corner of Trafalgar Square and Nile Street is under used, and that continued ownership of the site may not be in the best interest of ratepayers. Feedback sought for Betts Carpark Nelson City Council is looking for public feedback on its proposal to sell Betts Carpark.

Street (between Saltwater Creek and the croquet/tennis courts) will be available too. Changing rooms, toilets, etc will be progressively reinstated from early April through to the end of May once it is safe to do so. In the meantime, portaloos will be available for spectators (just outside the stadium) for the next couple of months. Lots of great progress has been made that you can learn about on our website. Teaching the next generation Our early childhood teachers, who provide learning and development for the next generation, might just be our most important social engineers. Early childhood educators play a pivotal role in a child’s formative years, teaching our children how to learn, how to communicate, and fostering a positive attitude towards education. Quality teaching is frequently highlighted as having the ability to boost a child’s learning success. Helen Warren, Education Delivery Leader of Te Rito Maioha Early Childhood New Zealand, says it is early childhood education settings and teachers who provide great environments for children to learn, and give them a good chance of reaching their potentials to be wonderful human beings.

I recently attended the graduation of 25 newly qualified early childhood teachers. I could feel the passion in the room. As Helen puts it, “Becoming an early childhood teacher is almost a calling for many. People are drawn to it for many reasons, but a common one is that they want to make a positive difference to the lives of our most vulnerable citizens, our children.” It was a privilege to be able to be a part of the recent graduation, and I am pleased to see so many taking up the mantle to teach the next generation.

It is important that you order or collect your wood well before you need to burn it and store it properly so it will be completely dry and ready to burn. Firewood should be stored in a dry, well ventilated place, off the ground. Ideally this should be under cover, in a garage or shed or under the eaves alongside your home. If this isn’t possible at your place, use a tarpaulin or sheet of heavy duty plastic to keep the rain and dew off your wood. If you have unseasoned or green wood (perhaps from a tree you have cut down at your place) be aware that it will take 6 – 12 months to dry. Remember the greener the wood, the more smoke it generates, affecting Nelson’s air quality. You can get your wood from a registered GOOD WOOD supplier listed on the Council’s website, nelson.govt.nz (search phrase = good wood). It’s also a good time to get your flue cleaned and replace any broken parts on your burner – it will burn more cleanly, creating more heat and saving you money.

Share your feedback on this year’s draft Annual Plan Nelson City Council is holding drop in sessions on the Consultation Document for its draft Annual Plan 2016/17. The Consultation Document summarises changes to what was proposed in the Long Term Plan 2015 – 2025 which was adopted in 2015 and sets out Council’s plans for the city’s future. Three drop in sessions for the Annual Plan 2016/17 will be held as follows: • Wednesday 23 March, 5 – 6pm at Elma Turner Library • Sunday 3 April, 11 – 12pm at Nightingale Library Memorial • Wednesday 6 April, 11.30 – 12.30pm at Stoke Library The sessions are a chance for you to ask questions and discuss nelson.govt.nz

Water meter reading The residential water meter reading round is due to start on 1 April 2016, and will continue for about two months.

Work on Waimea Road continues Council’s investment in upgrading our stormwater systems continues with two significant projects underway on and around Waimea Road. The project sites are: • Around the Caltex Service Station corner, affecting Market, Waimea and Boundary Roads • Hampden Street East, around Nelson College, Franklyn Street and Waimea Road A short section of Waimea Road, near the Ridgeway turnoff, is also being resealed now. This is a shorter term project, due to be finished this week. While these projects are much needed, Council is aware they are creating traffic delays. For the duration of the projects please remember to: • Allow extra time for journeys • Be patient and considerate around the work sites • Travel by Rocks Road if you can • Consider walking or cycling on the Railway Reserve • Use the frequent commuter NBus service to help reduce congestion, get timetable details at nbus.co.nz Please, don’t be distracted by the work taking place and stay focussed on the traffic around you. Please check and ensure that the area surrounding, and meter box itself are clear and easily accessible for the readers to locate and read. Please do not have pot plants, or other items, sitting on the boxes. The meter readers are allowed to read the meters between 8am and 6pm seven days a week, including Sundays and public holidays. They will be identifiable by their hivisibility vests inscribed with 'WATER METER READER' and “DataCol” inscribed on the back of their vests. The city is divided up into areas, with the meter readers starting in Tahunanui, moving to Stoke, through the town, The Wood, Atawhai and ending at the Glen at the end of May. As part of the ongoing maintenance of the meters, some meters will be checked to see if they are still recording accurately. Should your meter be checked, the meter reader will let you know, if you are home at the time. If no one is home, a letter will be left in your letter box letting you know that Council contractors have been. The test requires the meter reader to fill a 10 litre bucket with water, and should the meter need to be replaced, the water will be turned off to do this. The whole check usually takes about 10 minutes. The meter readers will still be carrying out these checks in June. If your meter is not easily accessible for the readers, for example, behind a locked fence or if you have dogs, please contact our Contractor on 0800 870 008 so that suitable arrangements can be made to have the meter read. All water used through the meter is charged at $2.052 per cubic metre, GST inclusive. The invoice/statements are posted out usually within two weeks of the meter being read. They will be due for payment on 15 June 2016.

South Island Zephyrs set for Nelson convoy Andrew Board If you’re driving around Nelson this Easter Weekend and feel like you’re stuck in a 1960s time-warp, don’t worry you haven’t mastered timetravel – a South Island Zephyr show is in town. The Southern Connection 2016, is being hosted by the Blenheim Garden City Zephyr Car Club in Nelson. The event will be hosted at the Tahuna Beach Conference Centre

and will see around 60 Ford Zephyr’s on show, including about a dozen local cars. The event is for South Island Zephyr clubs to meet and show off their pride and joys. Ford Zephyr’s were popular British-made cars in New Zealand during the 1950s and 1960s. The event starts on Saturday with a Show and Shine on the grass area at the Speight’s Ale House. Public viewing will be from

9.30am until 1.30pm. On Sunday the cars will go on a cruise of the region, starting at the Speight’s Ale House at 9.30am. They will then head to Motueka via the Moutere Hills. 'Father and son' event at Victory Boxing

Some of Victory Boxing's youngest members showed their dads a thing or two last Friday at the gym's father and son evening. Around 40 people attended the event, which also featured Tasman Makos and other adults.

Programme director at Victory Boxing, Paul Hampton, says the purpose is to encourage famililes to spend quality time together and to find exercise things to do together. "It's a chance for kids to share what they do with their fathers, in the programme."

FOOTBALL: Local club football teams got to dust off the cobwebs during a pre-season tournament at Jubilee Park on Sunday. Twelve teams from Richmond, Suburbs, Tahuna, Wakefield and Mapua took part in two divisions. Richmond firsts won the first division and Richmond Hornbills won the second division. Nelson kicks off season with big win over Stoke

The two city teams were the big winners on the opening day of senior club rugby season on Saturday, with Nelson and Marist both racking up big wins. All three division one games were played at Trafalgar Park to celebrate the start of the 2016 Car Company club rugby competition. Defending champions Wanderers beat Kahurangi 33-22 to again stake their claim as title favourites. But it was the resurgence of Marist and Nelson that was the story of the week. Marist beat 2014 champions Waimea Old Boys 29-7 to give it the best possible start to the season.

While Nelson recorded a stunning 62-0 win over Stoke. Seven different Nelson players dotted down for the hosts, with loose forward Ethan Blackadder a stand out and the return of former Makos skipper Andrew Goodman a welcome boost for their backline. Fullback Andrew Norton-Taylor also impressed with his hardrunning. This Thursday night, Nelson host Waimea at Trafalgar Park with a 7.30pm kick off. At the same time, Wanderers host Marist in Brightwater, while Stoke travel to play Kahurangi at 3pm on Good Friday.

Most athletes start to lose their mojo as they get older, and dickie knees and other injuries and just plain old age start to impact on speed, strength, flexibility and recovery times. But there's one group of athletes in Nelson who are getting better as they get older, or at least are getting slower at a much slower rates, and they have been putting out the numbers to prove it. In fact, the men in the 5059 age group, and a few in the 60-69, in this summer's Port Nelson Sea Swims, have been showing up many of the younger competitors. The top 50-59 swimmers, Hamish Neill, Denis Cooper and Chris Vincent, and fastest 60-69 swimmer, Ben van Dyke, were regular top 15 finishers during the popular 14-race series. In one swim on March 3, eight of the male 50-59 swimmers were in the top 20 compared to just two 30-39 swimmers and no 20-29 swimmers. Some of the older females are pretty fast

as well, with top 40-49 swimmer Kerry Mathieson and fastest 50-59 swimmer Christina Harris also top 15 regulars. "It's an age and stage thing," race director Dick Bennison, who is also one of the fastest 60-69 age groupers, says. "It's been like that for the last six or seven years with those 40-49 and 50-59 age groups. "There are a number of reasons for it and, I think, one of them is that there are a lot of broken-down runners in that age group and they are transitioning into swimming because it's another competitive sport that is low impact. "It's also the largest age group by far with 46 swimmers, so they have weight in numbers. The next biggest group is the 40-50 men with 34 swimmers." Another factor, according to Ben, is that the older swimmers have more time to train than the 20-49 age group who, he says, are too busy working, paying off mortgages sand looking after young families. "I was a competitive swimmer when I was young but stopped

in my mid-twenties because I was so busy. Then you get to 40 or 50 and you start to realise you are not fit and you want to get it all back." Hamish agrees with Ben, adding that swimming is one of the few sports where older competitors can hold their speed because it is "so dependent on technique". Denis and Ben say they are also lucky in Nelson because there is a dedicated group of veteran swimmers who regularly train together in the pool and sea. Although the veterans can't keep up with the young speedsters like series winners Thomas Heaton and Talya Harwood, Denis says they still enjoy the rivalry among their own age group and are always striving to find more speed. "I think I'm getting faster as I get older," Denis says. "The only thing is that these young swimmers are getting faster, a lot faster than I am." The Port Nelson Sea Swim series averaged 136 swimmers each night with a total of 1915 swims.
